Here is a very simple-minded contribution to the conversation: whenever this topic arises, I think of Jesus. If this were truly central to Christian living (as the plight of the poor was, as the love of enemies was, as complete trust in God's grace was), wouldn't Jesus have addressed it clearly enough for this message to be part of the Gospels?
It’s amazing what we focus on vs what Jesus is focused on. We may want to decide who is in and out but Jesus has made clear that everyone in not because of their merit but because of his faithfulness and grace.
