I made peace with a long-held cynicism on intercessory prayer (cynicism, a fine reaction, but a tiresome lifestyle) with my shaky Wesleyan framework of grace. I do pray now, addressing the divine spark in me (prevenient grace) as a way of turning my attention to God, who is not in some celestial retreat. The answer to my prayer, in my thinking, must also come from inside me, and I should be prepared to be the agent in the change I am seeking. Finding my role, my Christian duty, in being the hands and feet of God. Sometimes the answer is to soften my heart as you say—not a small thing among the distractions. Other times, it is a call to duty or sacrifice (sanctifying grace). We are the ones we have been waiting for, as Obama cribbed.
