Mountain Top Creator
God has been creating since the beginning of time, God continues to create today.
Psalm 90
Last weekend, I traveled with my family to the Blue Ridge Mountains. While we love living inside the Beltway, getting away to the mountains is a must for our family. We will pack up a few times each year and head west for a few days of hiking, eating, campfires, and resting. Now, with two children, there is not much time for resting, but the break from the routine of life inside the Beltway is always welcomed.
On Saturday morning, Allison and I took Camden and Nora hiking to Humpback Rock. As we hiked and saw the first sign indicating the trail was 0.8 miles, I thought, “This shouldn’t be too bad.” Before I knew it, we were an hour into the hike and still had a few switchbacks because the 843’ elevation gain was not for the faint of heart.
Between labored breathing and asking, “Are we there yet? “Nora asked me how the mountains were made. Her all too smart big brother chimed in with something about tectonic plates, pressure, and a lot of time. Nora was satisfied with her big brother’s science-focused response, and then Allison asked, “Do you think the mountain is still being formed?
The psalmist wrote, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Before Humpback Rock had its hump, God was God, and after Humpback Rock’s hump has eroded, God will still be God. God is from everlasting to everlasting because God is not only the source of life for all of creation, God is the author of time. Without God, we are, and we have nothing. And because God has been creating since the beginning of time, God continues to create today.
God is creating new mountains daily as the rocks are shaped by hikers’ feet, wind, rain, and tectonic pressure.
God is creating new life as the leaves of fall continue to change their colors to fall eventually, making room for new growth that is to come.
God continually reshapes the Church as we gather for worship, play, and mission.
As the world around us changes, know that from everlasting to everlasting, from the first to the last, God is working atop the mountains, inside the Beltway, and across all of creation.
So well said. Beautiful.
