It’s another morning after another deadly school shooting in the United States. The morning news devoted all of 15 minutes to the coverage in this hour’s programming block before pivoting to Trump and his pornstar payoff 15 minutes for three 9 year olds and three teachers murdered while at school.
What else are parents to do?
We haven’t told our kids.
I don’t know how to tell them we have failed them again.
We have been talking about middle schools with Camden. The perks of neighborhood school versus private or lottery - academics, extra-curriculars, friends, schedules, lunch menus.
What else are parents to do?
Maybe the conversation should shift - security measures, side doors, access lists, resource officers.
What else are parents to do?
We walked to the bus stop this morning. The dog leash in one hand and Camden’s hand in the other. I will repeat the routine again at 9:00 with Nora. Our normal routine as the nation goes through the motions of our collective normal routine after a school shooting.
Thoughts and prayers.
Outrage.
Fear.
Action.
Complacency.
Frustration.
Repeat.
What else are parents to do?
As I dropped Camden off at the bus stop this morning he gave me a hug and I prayed, “Lord, watch over Camden and his classmates. Keep them safe. Hold them in your care. If they learn something, that’s great. Send them home safely at the end of the day. Hold them in your care. Amen.”
I will pray the same prayer when I drop off Nora later this morning.
What else are parents to do?
Well I wish more parents would vote to protect their own kids from what is actually harming them. Hard to not be enraged at one’s fellow Americans right now. God forgive me.
