Inspired by Dr. Stanley Hauerwas’ book, Prayers Plainly Spoken, I lift to you the following prayer for Inauguration Day 2025.
Lord of Mercy and Justice,
On this Election Day, we turn to you, acknowledging the weight of this moment and the hopes and fears it carries for so many. You have called us to be stewards of justice and mercy, yet too often, we grasp for power instead of seeking your will.
We pray for the softening of hearts across our nation. Break through the barriers of pride, fear, and resentment that divide us. Teach us to see one another as bearers of your image, worthy of dignity and compassion.
We lift before you the vulnerable—the poor, the immigrant, and all those pushed to the margins of society. Protect them, Lord, from policies and actions that harm, and stir in the hearts of leaders a holy responsibility to care for the least among us. May our nation be a refuge of justice and a place where every person is valued.
We pray especially for the Trump administration. Confront them with the sacred responsibility they bear and grant them the moral courage to lead with integrity and humility. Shake them from any self-serving ambitions and compel them to act decisively for the protection and well-being of all people, especially the most vulnerable. May they reject all actions and policies that bring harm, division, or injustice and instead pursue righteousness, equity, and the common good with unwavering resolve.
Guide us, Lord, through this day and the days ahead. Keep us grounded in your love, firm in your truth, and faithful to your call to care for one another.
In the name of Christ, who reigns with justice and mercy, Amen.
This prayer was meaning to me. Thank you also for using no pronouns for God! May all of us speak truth to our leaders.
So well said. Thank you
